Meliá Hotels International announces the opening of the Palau de Congressos de Cataluña in October this year and unveils its plan to transform the rechristened Gran Meliá Miranda de Pedralbes hotel into a gold standard city resort destination, set to reopen in January 2024.

As explained by Ramón Vidal Castro, who will be stepping down from his position as Director of Operations at Meliá Hotels International in Palma de Mallorca to spearhead the launch of this momentous property, "The hotel's renovation works, backed by Tyrus, have been underway for several months, diligently fine-tuning the infrastructure after three years of inactivity. Our aim is to reintroduce an exceptional hotel and conference centre to Barcelona, catering to both the conference and city leisure sectors."

According to Meliá’s vision, the Gran Meliá Miranda de Pedralbes will offer a serene oasis in the city for both guests and residents.  The project enhances the communication between the hotel spaces and the surrounding historic gardens, spreading across more than 25,000 square metres, with a blend of romantic and modernist styles, bringing light and vitality to the common areas. The renovation work is under the expert guidance of Álvaro Sans, from ASAH studio with a specialisation in hotels.

The Miranda de Pedralbes hotel will also offer an array of leisure, wellness, and lifestyle experiences. Customers will be able to enjoy a diverse culinary offering at its signature restaurants and all-day dining options, as well as a jazz club, nightclub, a lively swimming pool area, boasting the finest views of Barcelona, and a spectacular rooftop terrace, providing 360º views of the city. All of which serves as a powerful testament to the property's transformative vision.

Following its renovation, the hotel will feature 391 rooms including 65 suites of different categories, the most exclusive being the Red Level Penthouse Suite, spread over three floors and boasting 360º views of Barcelona. These accommodations promise to immerse both business and leisure guests in the Gran Meliá brand experience, which draws inspiration from the allure of luxury and Mediterranean elegance and celebrates simple pleasures and connection with the earth.

The reopening of this iconic hotel coincides with Barcelona's “renaissance” as the city sees a revival in personal and luxury travel and once again reclaims its position as a leading global destination for meetings, conferences, conventions, and incentive travel. The new Palau de Congressos de Cataluña will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, facilities and equipment. Leveraging Meliá's wealth of experience in hosting all sorts of events, including their expertise in sustainable practices, the venue will add 39 meeting rooms of various sizes to the overall regional capacity. It will also house an auditorium with a capacity of over 2,000 people, along with 4,000 square metres of spaces dedicated to fairs and exhibitors.

Originally conceived as Rey Juan Carlos I for the 1992 Olympics, under the architect Carlos Ferrater who was honoured with the National Architecture Prize, the hotel is now poised to reclaim its status as a prominent landmark in urban and MICE hospitality. The Gran Meliá Miranda de Pedralbes will be managed by Ramón Vidal Castro, with a career that includes the management of the Meliá Castilla hotel in Madrid for 6 years – a flagship property of the group hosting over 6,000 annual events - and his successful launch and management of the Hotel and Palau de Congressos complex in Palma.
